Trek in the majestic shadow of Mount Jhomolhari, the sacred summit of Bhutan, on this moderate trek with camping, hotel stays and spectacular scenery. On this trek you hike an average of 11 miles (17 km) each day, reaching a high altitude of 15,906 feet (4,820 m) at Yalila Pass.

You stay in the best hotels available or camp in meadows and stone shelters. A bilingual guide accompanies you throughout your trek. Horses or yaks carry most of your equipment. You carry a day pack with personal items. Your flight to Paro reveals breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan peaks including sacred Mt. Jhomolhari and Mt.  Jichu Drake in Bhutan.

The trek follow the river gently up hill through a narrowing agricultural valley, enjoying views of high ridges and snow-capped peaks. In the higher elevations you see yaks and yak herders' camps.

A day hike at the base camp is always worth to 24,136-foot (7,314-m) Mount Jhomolhari, Jichu Drake or towards unclimbed summits and ridges to the east. You spend a day at Lingshi and explore Tsokha Lake or the base camp of Jichu Drake, where you may see hundreds of blue sheep and musk deer. The following day, you ascend Yalila Pass. Although this is one of your longest trekking days, the trail is mostly downhill and, if it's a clear day, you are rewarded with views of Mount Jhomolhari, Tserim Kang and Masagang. Your driver is waiting at Dodina to transport you the nine miles (14 km) back to Thimphu. You take a day hike to Punakha where you see the gold-domed Punakha Dzong, once the seat of the government in Bhutan and now the winter residence of the Central Monastic Body's 600 monks. You can visit the dzong if the monks are in residence. You also have a full day for sightseeing and shopping in Thimphu before your flight home.

Sample Itinerary for Jhomolhari Trek

Day 1: ARRIVAL PARO

Arrive Paro by Druk Air Flight. During this flight, you experience break taking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan peaks, including sacred Jhomolhari and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro Airport you are received by a tour representative. Drive to Hotel through Paro valley, an enchanting experience. After lunch, visit the Ta-Dzong museum. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 2: PARO – SIGHTSEEING

Drive northwest up the Pa Chu to Drugyel Dzong, the ruined fort, which once defended this valley from the Tibetan invasion. This fortress was strategic in Bhutan's defense against the Tibetan invasion. Mount Jhomolhari, the sacred summit, reaches skyward beyond the dzong and can be viewed on a clear day. On the way back you visit a typical Bhutanese farmhouse. Overnight in Paro.

Day 3: PARO – SHANA (TREK BEGINS)

Drive up to Drugyel Dzong where the road ends and the trek begin, following the river gently up the hill through a narrowing agricultural valley. Your camp is just beyond an army post. Altitude is 9,240 feet (2,800 m). Distance: 11 miles (17 km) or five to six hours.

Day 4: SHANA – SOI THANGTHANGKAHA

Continue uphill through the river valley. It narrows and closes in and the trail winds up and down along the drainage, but descends considerably overall. Camp is in the meadow in a stone shelter built for trekkers. Distance: 13 miles (21 km) or seven to eight hours.

Day 5: SOI THANGTHANGKAHA – JANGOTHANG

On up the Pa Chu. Pass a small army post where the valley begins to widen again. Now views of high ridges and then snow-capped peaks are all around. You begin to see yaks and yak herders' camps. Lunch may be at one of these camps beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Jhomolhari. Altitude is 13,332 feet (4,040 m). Distance: 12 miles (19 km) or five to six hours.

Day 6: JANGOTHANG – HALT

The days halt is worth to do lot of excursions from the base camp as well as for acclimatization.

Trek up to Tshophu for fishing or stupendous day hikes in three directions: Jhomolhari directly west, Jichu Drake to the north and unclimbed summits and ridges to the east.

Day 7: JANGOTHANG – LINGSHI

Wide yak pastures on the way up and down the pass, possibly still some people in their yak tents depending on the time of the year. Great views of Lingshi Dzong as you come down into the Lingshi basin if the weather is clear. See Tserim Kang and its descending glaciers at the north end of the valley. Camp is in a stone shelter with an inside fire pit. You can sleep on the wood floor or in a tent. Altitude: 13,695 feet (4,150 m). Distance: 12 miles (19 km), about five to six hours.

Day 8: LINGSHI – HALT

You stop at Lingshi and take a day excursion to Tsokha Lake or the base camp of Jichu Drake. During the excursion hundreds of blue sheep and musk deer can also be seen on the way. Altitude: 14,850 feet (4,500 m). Distance: Nine miles (15 km), about three to four hours.

Day 9: LINGSHI – SHODU

The trail ascends up to the Yalila pass. From the pass Mount Jhomolhari, Tserim Kang and Masagang can be seen on a clear day. The trail then descends considerably. Camp is in a stone shelter built for the trekkers. It has a fire pit inside. Altitude: 130,779 feet (3,963 m) Distance: 14 miles (22 km), about seven to eight hours.

Day 10: SHODU – BARSHONG

Follow the Thim-Chu River through a forest of rhododendrons and waterfalls. The river narrows and closes in and the trail winds up and down along a drainage. You ascend to the ruins of Barshong Dzong. Camp just below a ruined fortress within a stone shelter built for the trekkers. Altitude is 12,490 feet (3,785 m). Distance: eight miles (13 km), about three to four hours.

Day 11: BARSHONG – DOLAM KENCHO

Descending to the Thim-Chu, you walk through the forest of thicker rhododendrons and ascend to the pasture land where you camp in a meadow. Altitude is 11,972 feet (3,628 m). Distance: seven miles (11 km), about three to four hours.

Day 12: DOLAM KENCHO – THIMPHU

Continue uphill through the forest to a small pass. The trail winds up and down along the drainage. Wild animals such as golden languor monkeys may be seen. You meet your transport to Thimphu at Dodina. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 13: THIMPHU – SIGHTSEEING

A full day of sightseeing and shopping in Thimphu. Wander in the town, visit the handicrafts emporium. Visit the workshop where handicrafts are made. In the afternoon, visit the Tashichho Dzong and National Memorial Chorten. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 14: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA

Drive to Punakha over Dochula pass at 3150mts. Spectacular views of the Eastern Himalaya can be seen. Visit the Punakha Dzong if the monks are in Thimphu. Drive back to Thimphu.  Overnight at the hotel.

Day 15: PUNAKHA – PARO

Morning, drive back to Paro with a lunch stop at Thimphu. Overnight in Paro.

DAY 16: PARO – DEP

Early morning drive to Paro airport for your onward departure.
