LAND OF A MILLION ELEPHANTS

Day 1: Arrive Vientiane
On arrival in Vientiane, transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, a city tour takes in Vat Sisaket, with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, Vat Prakeo, Vat Simuang, the That Luang Monument and Vientiane’s own Arc de Triomphe, the Patouxai Monument. Overnight in Vientiane.

Day 2: Vientiane-Luang Prabang 
Transfer to Wattay Airport for a morning flight to the former royal capital, Luang Prabang. Transfer to hotel before setting out to explore some of the sights of this peaceful, provincial city. There is little traffic on the Luang Prabang roads and monks in orange robes scurry in all directions carrying umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun. The former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, Vat Xieng Thong, Vat Sen, Vat Visun and Mount Phousi with panoramic views over the city should not be missed. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (B)

Day 3: Luang Prabang-Pak Ou Caves-Luang Prabang 
A half-day boat trip on the Mekong River to visit the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. On the way visit a riverside village where rice wine is produced. In Pak Ou, thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues are crammed into the two caves carved out of a towering limestone cliff. They range in size from a few centimetres to the size of a man. After lunch, head back to Luang Prabang and visit a weaving village where traditional Lao textiles are woven on ancient wooden looms. Rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight in Luang Prabang. Day 4: Luang Prabang-Vientiane 
After breakfast visit Luang Prabang Market before transferring to the airport for the flight back to Vientiane. Alternatively there is a very special (optional) dawn visit before breakfast to witness the long lines of orange-robed monks leaving their pagodas to receive offerings of food from Luang Prabang residents. In Vientiane, transfer to hotel on arrival. In the afternoon visit some local workshops producing Buddha statues, woodcarvings, puppets, bronze and copperwork. Overnight in Vientiane. (B)

Day 5: Depart Vientiane 
After breakfast visit the Morning Market before transfer to the airport for departure flight. (B)

NOTE: A Baci ceremony is included in this tour. The purpose of the Baci, mixing Animism and Buddhism beliefs, is to call back escaped spirits to the body something that is very important before major events such as weddings, births, travel or welcoming friends. The ceremony is always followed by a traditional dinner with a Lao family.
